Something odd -but definitely not a bad thing- was noticed today on Weepy Wednesday.
This odd thing was the fact that Batman came up in many conversations today. I had a few conversations specifically about Batman and sometimes he was just there like a big cloaked topic of awesomeness. But I will get into why I mentioned this later.
The first thing I don't like or really just find funny. Is naive teachers. I have a teacher that is a very happy person and loves to chat with the students and be friendly which is fine. When appropriate as I have stated before. But the thing is, they are still a teacher and we are still students so there is going to be this 'rank' barrier between us at all times. But the strange thing was that this particular teacher didn't seem to realise this.
Today they were talking about one student who, when she was being moderated for a new job. Made comments such as.
"Oh -blanked for safety- I don't normally get -blank- but when you explain it to me it makes perfect sense"
And.
"It's a pleasure and an honour having you teach us and I am going to miss you when I leave."
Now from the get go I could tell that this student was mocking the teacher and was making these sarcastic comments because she was being moderated and watched not because the wanted to help her get the job.
Now I don't know if they realised that they were being mocked and somewhat ridiculed. But from what I saw and heard they had not realised it. Mainly because the teacher then thanked the student for saying such love things about them in front of the moderator. And said it was so cute the way he said it.
Why then when I am sarcastic to people do I not get praise and love?
Now my main gripe about the whole thing is that some teachers just don't see the true forebode of their job and the barrier between them and students. No matter how friendly they are with a student they will always make jokes about them behind your back. It just happens. They are the one that stands up at the front and goes on and on about something and yells at a student if they do something wrong. This automatically makes them a target for jests and jibes. This barrier will forever stand firm.
I am definitely not saying teachers should not be friendly. I find it a treat when a teacher treats me nearer to an equal and talks to me like my opinion and ideas matter. But all teachers have to realise at the end of the day. They are a teacher and I am my colleagues are students. That won't change until we leave school. Then they can be best pals if they want I don't care because then the barrier is gone or at least most of it is. Because they still will have been the teacher.
Now onto the whole Batman thing.
There is a famous poem by Simon Armitage that is named 'Kid' and from the bat it is obvious it is about Batman. The whole poem is about how Robin is unhappy being just the sidekick and not a partner.
Many Batman fans now would say this poem is about Dick Grayson who went on to be Nightwing. But there are several parts of the poem that say otherwise. From what I have devised it is a mix of all Robins from Jason Todd onwards.
Anyway, I was trying to explain this point to my English teacher and I noticed very quickly that she had no clue about Batman other than his name and sidekick. Which is sacrilegious if you ask me.
When I referred to Armitage using the 'Jason Todd story' she thought I meant the author. And again thought this when I mentioned Tim Drake and Dick Grayson. And she couldn't understand the concept of Robin leaving Batman to become Nightwing (Dick Garyson) and changing his outfit. Now it was the changing his outfit that seemed to dumbfound her the most.
This ties in very nicely to my first point. This barrier between students and teachers. Teachers will never really be 'hip' and into the same stuff as teenagers or kids. The rare few do love their comics or decent music. But they will never be able to really relate to teenagers even though they once were one. So why try? They should just teach the students and be friendly with them if they can. Tell students off when they have to be told off.

My friend had her phone confiscated for texting at lunchtime, she was socially excluded when they searched her text messages and found one mocking another teacher's weight.
ReplyDeleteThat's worrying considering the things I've said about teachers in the past.
